What is a Chimney Sweep?
A chimney sweep is someone who cleans soot and ash from fireplace chimneys and wood heater chimney flues. Chimneys may be straight or contain many changes of direction.
During the use of the fireplace, a layer of creosote can build up on the inside of the chimney which can restrict the flow of your fireplace.
This can also cause your home to fill up with smoke which can trigger respiratory and cardiovascular conditions such as asthma, bronchitis and emphysema.
Creosote can also catch on fire setting the chimney and the building alight. The chimney must be swept regularly to remove the soot, ash and Creosote.

In Great Britain, the master sweeps took apprentices, typically orphan boys and girls and trained them to climb chimneys.
The master chimney sweep would clothe and feed them, but they rarely received salary.
Many climbing boys and girls got stuck, some even died during this period.
From 1778 until 1875 a series of laws attempted to regulate their working conditions.
The Chimney Sweepers and Chimneys Regulation Act 1840 made it illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to sweep chimneys. It was widely ignored. The Chimney Sweepers Regulation Act 1864, c37, tightened controls significantly, by authorising fines and imprisonment for master sweeps who were ignoring the law, giving the police the power of arrest on suspicion.
In 1875 a Bill was pushed through Parliament which finally stopped the practice of sending children up chimneys.
Also in 1875 a Chimney Sweepers Act was passed that required chimney sweepers to be authorised by the police to carry on their businesses in there district.
